DC3 at Sólheimasandur, Iceland

80.00100.00

In 1973 a United States Navy DC3 plane ran out of fuel and crashed on the black beach at Sólheimasandur, on the South Coast of Iceland. There were no fatalities. The pilot had mistakenly switched to the wrong fuel tank. Little did he know that the crashed plane would become a tourist curiosity drawing thousands out onto the black, seemingly endless lava strewn flatland to the site of the crash.

The area is wild and can be dangerous as it is open to the fierce weather systems that are all too frequent along the south coast. A heavy hail shower was approaching from the Atlantic which sets a dramatic atmosphere to this surreal site. I wanted to show the vast, flat and empty landscape that dwarfs the plane. To do this I faced the incoming weather system and placed the plane to the lower third within the frame.
