The Black Castle

The Black Castle in Wicklow Town, Ireland overlooks the harbour entrance to this historic, eastern coastal town. It stands on a rocky promontory over the sea, at the eastern side of the town. In 1169, Strongbow was granted these lands who subsequently gifted them to the Baron Maurice Fitzgerald on a condition that castles were built for protection. The castle was destroyed in the early 14th century by the O’Byrne and O’Toole clans and to this day lies in ruin.

The castle has been used in many films including the classic John Boorman movie Excalibur. It is a regular feature on the set of the Vikings.

This sunrise image was taken in October 2018. During the sunrise a large cloud moved through the frame and provided a good balance to the image.
